What happens before an opportunity exists, and the one gate every source passes through. Lifecycle states live on the person or account; the gate creates the opportunity; the stages after it are on the Sell page.

GTM Operating Model › Qualify
Qualify: lifecycle states and the gate
Before the gate, a person or account moves through lifecycle states. The gate creates the opportunity. After it, the opportunity moves through stages (see Sell). Same gate for every source.

THE RULES
One gate
the SQL definition is the same for inbound, outbound, partner and product-led. Source changes who works it and how fast, never what qualified means
Two records
states live on the person or account and are owned by Marketing, Sales Development or Product. The gate creates the opportunity; stages live there and are owned by Sales
Pipeline starts at the gate
nothing before the SQL counts as pipeline or carries a forecast category; everything after it does. Self-serve conversions get a system-created opportunity so they count too
Conversion between each state and stage is a funnel metric; win rate is closed-won divided by all opportunities that reached a decision, not the last stage's conversion. Both are defined on the Stage definitions page and read in the weekly funnel and routing check.

How to read this

  • Lead, MQL and PQL are states on the person or account record, owned by Marketing, Sales Development or Product. Nothing before the gate is pipeline.
  • The gate is one definition for every source: meeting held, need and budget owner confirmed, AE accepts. Passing it creates the opportunity record and flips the account to sales-qualified.
  • Product-led accounts above the size threshold come to the same gate as sales-assist; below it they convert self-serve, and the system creates the closed-won opportunity so the revenue is still counted.
  • Closed-lost at any stage goes back to nurture with a reason; nurture re-scores on every new action.
  • The exact criteria for every state and stage are on the Stage definitions page, which is the only place they are written.
