Qualified opportunity to signature. The stages are the same for every segment; what changes is who is attached and how long each stage takes.

GTM Operating Model › Sell
Sell: qualified opportunity to signature
SQL · the gate
meeting held; need and budget owner confirmed; AE accepts; opportunity created
↗
Discovery
pain quantified by the buyer; buying group identified; timeline stated by the buyer
↗
Solution fit
success criteria agreed in writing; technical fit validated; champion confirmed; SE attached
↗
Proposal
priced proposal with the economic buyer; Deal Desk approves exceptions
↗
Negotiation
verbal yes from the economic buyer; redlines or procurement; signature date committed
↗
Closed-won
signed contract and billing terms; handoff record complete; to Onboard
↗
Closed-lost
from any stage; one reason from a fixed list, required to close; recycled to Nurture after a cooling period
owner · Account Executive owns the opportunity end to end; Sales Engineering owns the technical win; Deal Desk owns pricing and terms exceptions; RevOps owns the stage definitions and the data. measured by · win rate, sales cycle length, average deal size, stage-to-stage conversion, pipeline coverage
BY SEGMENT
SMB
one or two calls; AE demos without an SE; list price, standard paper, card or invoice; cycle measured in days; high volume per rep
Mid-market
all five stages; SE on the demo; some discounting with Deal Desk approval; light security review; cycle measured in weeks
Enterprise
multi-threaded buying committee; proof of concept; custom terms, MSA, security questionnaire, procurement; cycle measured in months; few deals per rep
Closed-lost reasons, one list for everyone: no decision · lost to competitor · price · missing capability · timing · champion left · no budget. The list is short on purpose; a long list gets "other" 60% of the time. Win/loss is reviewed monthly by RevOps and fed back to Marketing (targeting), Product (capability gaps) and Sales enablement.

How to read this

  • An opportunity exists from the SQL gate onward and belongs to one account executive end to end. The exit criteria on each box are the ones from the Stage definitions page.
  • Sales Engineering attaches at Solution fit; Deal Desk at Proposal for anything off the standard terms.
  • Closed-lost is allowed from any stage and requires one reason from a short fixed list.
  • SMB closes in days with no SE; enterprise runs a proof of concept, security review and procurement over months.
